My biological grandmother and I just had our first civil phone call in over three years. She hasn’t been receptive to my transition. She actually called me August and he. It was amazing. She also got my name engraved on to her ring that has all of her grandsons’ names.
The last time we spoke was a few months ago when she called me on my break at work. We got into a screaming match over the phone. She didn’t understand “why such a beautiful girl would destroy her body.”
She dropped out of school at 15 to have her first child, my biological mother. She is insanely racist, classist and homophobic. SHe barely accepts my older gay brother. She is not educated or exposed anything but white, straight lower class people. She doesn’t get it.
But she’s trying.
